Feature: LGBTQ+ Friendly Countries Open this Summer 🏳️‍🌈

It’s Pride Month! And we’re sharing some of the LGBTQ+ countries that are open to visitors this summer.

A quick reminder – each country has their own travel restrictions, so the following are not recommendations for travel corridors, and you may need to quarantine coming home. However the following countries are welcoming visitors and you can check travel restrictions using our search functionality.

Whilst Canada, which tops most lists for LGBTQ+ travel, is not accepting visitors, lots of options remain. Sadly many remain on the UK’s Amber List which means quarantining at home for 10 days upon return. Worth it though…?!

Some of our favourites…

Netherlands

With the infamous Amsterdam Gay Pride still set to go ahead with restrictions from 6 – 8 August 2021, the Netherlands is well-known for its LGBTQ+ culture, with their rights some of the most progressive in the world.

Travel permitted from: United Kingdom, EU countries

Spain

Home of Tapas, Sangria as well as one of Europe’s most progressive legal systems protecting same sex marriage and transgender rights, Spain is often rated as one of the best countries to travel for the LGBTQ+ community.

Travel permitted from: United Kingdom, EU countries

Portugal

While Portugal was just removed from the UK’s Green List it remains open to visitors. It is also 5th on the LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index. Check out some Portugal ideas here.

Travel permitted from: United Kingdom, EU countries

Iceland

Famous as the Land of Fire and Ice because of its volcanoes and glaciers, over 75% of respondents in Gallop’s poll say Iceland is a ‘good place to live for gay or lesbian people’.

Travel permitted (for vaccinated visitors) from: United Kingdom (Green List – woohoo!), United States, EU countries

Malta

Famous for its diving, architectural sites, and festivals, Malta is amongst the most safe LGBTQ+ travel destinations according to the LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index.

Travel permitted from: United Kingdom, EU countries

For our European readers, Sweden and the UK regularly top rankings and remain open. Brazil has a mixed record of late with an increase in hate crimes, but remains one of the most popular destinations for the LGBTQ+ population and is open to US visitors. Thailand is also a popular destination for the LGBTQ+ population, however despite Phuket on track to open to tourists from 1 July, the country is in the midst of its third and most significant wave of Covid-19.

Happy planning! 🌈

We have borrowed heavily from LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index as well as the wonderful Nomadic Boys blog to create this list.
