Updated: UK government travel ‘traffic light’ announcement

Last updated: 4 June 2021

Green List reduced following 3rd June Government announcement – Portugal removed and no new countries added

Since the 17th May, UK holidaymakers have been legally allowed to travel again. If you’re not huge travel geeks like us, here is what the traffic light system actually means…

Green

  • One test required within 72 hours of flight to the UK (proof of a negative nucleic acid, such as a PCR, LAMP, or antigen test, must be provided on departure)
  • A PCR test taken on or before the second day back in the UK

Amber

  • You must complete an online public health passenger locator form upon return
  • One test required within 72 hours of flight to the UK (proof of a negative nucleic acid, such as a PCR, LAMP, or antigen test, must be provided on departure from the location you’re travelling from)
  • Quarantine for 10 days at home
  • PCR tests on Days 2 and 8, with the option to pay for an extra test on Day 5 to be released from isolation early

Red

  • You must complete an online public health passenger locator form upon return
  • Only UK nationals and residents permitted to travel (no visitors)
  • One test required within 72 hours of flight to the UK (proof of a negative nucleic acid, such as a PCR, LAMP, or antigen test, must be provided on departure)
  • Upon return to the UK, hotel quarantine required, at a cost of up to £1,750 per person for 11 days, including tests on Days 2 and 8
  • Not eligible for Test to Release (i.e. you can not do an extra test to be released early)
  • Direct flights from the red-listed nations are officially banned

Here’s a list of the countries on theUK Green List – we’ve compiled the core information on each of these countries at the links below including local information on public transport, restaurants and bars:

Where can I travel from the UK without quarantining?

We’re afraid the green list isn’t as simple as last year’s travel corridors. The UK traffic light system only covers the rules on arrival into the UK. But there is some good news…

The most open: Gibraltar has announced that it will allow Brits to enter with no quarantine, without requiring either a vaccination or a test.

For vaccinated holidaymakers: Only vaccinated Brits can get into Israel from early June, albeit without a quarantine. Due to the unrest many operators have stopped flights to Israel temporarily. Iceland requires vaccinated tourists to quarantine until they have taken a test in country.

Green does not mean go: Currently, UK holidaymakers are banned from entering Australia, New Zealand and Singapore altogether.

It is worth noting that a number of countries, including Cyprus and Malta are welcoming vaccinated British holidaymakers, but you will have to quarantine at home on your return to the UK.

Spain and Netherlands have announced plans to allow British holidaymakers without either vaccines or tests, with Spain allowing Brits in from Monday 24th May. Greece is allowing visitors and vaccinated arrivals can avoid testing and quarantine requirements. Italy have announced that visitors from EU, Britain and Israel who tested negative for Covid won’t need to quarantine. The best way to find out the rules is to search the restrictions between any two other locations here!

Will the traffic light list change?

Yes, the government plans to review it every three weeks. In the first review Portugal was removed from the list, taking off the only major holiday destination, and showing the continued uncertainty facing holidaymakers this summer. No other countries were added.

We are still hopeful that a number of our favourite destinations in Greece, Italy, Spain and other hotspots including the Caribbean will move to the Green list in the coming weeks and months, so don’t give up hope of that giro/pizza/tapas in the summer sun just yet.

We’re so hopeful that this marks the start of travel again for those in the UK, after such a turbulent year.
